Private Pete’s adventure began when he signed up for the Marine Corps straight out of high school. It was his ultimate life goal, and at just 18 years old, he was ready to make it happen.
Looking back now, maybe he should have aimed higher, but who can say they achieved their wildest dreams at such a young age?
Paris Island
He found himself on Paris Island, smack in the middle of a hot and humid summer. That place would be his home for the next three months.
Anyone who’s been to Paris Island knows it’s no walk in the park. It’s all about running around like a headless chicken, getting yelled at left and right, all in the hopes of shaping you into something worthwhile.
No Pain, No Gain
Looking back, Pete wouldn’t change a single thing.
He entered weighing a scrawny 140 pounds and left a beefed-up 170 pounds, all because his senior Drill Instructor couldn’t tell one recruit from another and made him do extra push-ups whenever he felt like it.
Nighttime Reflections
Nights were the best time of day. That was when they could finally lay in their racks, worrying about the next day’s challenges and praying for some decent shut-eye.
Fire Watch – A Love-Hate Relationship
And then there was fire watch, the duty of walking around the squad bay and keeping an eye out for anything unusual.
Most guys despised it, but Pete secretly enjoyed it when he got the first or last shift because that meant he could snooze without interruption.
The Rifle Incident
Rifles had to be secured every night with a lock and chain, and one night, Private Pete messed up.
He forgot to secure his rifle properly – a stupid mistake.
Recruit Johnson’s Sneaky Move
Now, the recruit on fire watch that night was Recruit Johnson.
Instead of waking Private Pete up and saying, “Hey, man, your rifle isn’t secured,” Recruit Johnson decided to wake up the duty drill instructor and tattle on Pete!
He convinced the drill instructor to let Pete take his fire duty shift and got to go back to sleep. Talk about a sneaky move!

Suddenly, Private Pete was stuck on fire watch for the next three nights in a row. Revenge was on his mind, but he had to figure out how to get back at Johnson.
The Laundry Epiphany
And then it hit him while sorting out the laundry. As part of their fire watch duties, they had to roll each other’s skivvy shirts and socks into grunt rolls and put them on the lockers.
Well, Recruit Johnson was one of the platoon’s tallest guys. So, every night during Private Pete’s fire watch shifts, he made it his mission to ensure that all of Johnson’s grunt rolls contained size small shirts and skivvy shorts.
Size Small Surprises
Night after night, Johnson found himself struggling to fit into the ill-fitting clothes, much to the amusement of Private Pete and the rest of the recruits.
Johnson’s Skivvy Squeeze
Each morning, the recruits would gather for the daily report, a customary routine where they would rotate, displaying any injuries or issues while dressed in their skivvies.
It was during these moments that Johnson’s wardrobe predicament was most noticeable, as he stood squeezed into clothing that was way too tight!

Johnson would always express his frustration during his free time, questioning why he always ended up with small-sized garments.
Everyone would laugh, and none more so than Pete, who couldn’t help but revel in his brilliantly executed revenge!
