Conflict is a part of life, and unfortunately, it can often spill over into the workplace. In this story, we follow Ben, a hardworking employee at a store located in a rough part of town. His day takes a turn for the worse when he encounters a difficult customer who is determined to cause trouble.
But what starts as a simple complaint quickly turns into a battle of wills, with Ben and his colleagues pushed to their limits! Will they be able to handle this customer and come out unscathed? Read on to find out.
An Average Retail Job
Ben works at a small store in a less-than-desirable part of town. The pay isn’t great, but it’s tolerable, except for the jerks that come in all day.
His Patience Was Put to the Test
One day, Ben is on shift with his supervisor and manager when a man walks in with a terrible attitude. The man is short, fat, and missing his front teeth.
Ben is the only one at the front, so the man demands that he goes to get the manager.
A Rude Individual
Not knowing which manager the man is referring to, Ben asks if he needs help with anything to try and figure out why he needs to speak with the manager.
The man snaps at him, “Go get your goddamn manager.”
So Ben gets both of his managers to deal with the man, and that’s when he learns why the man is there.
An Incident Occurred
The man claims that he was in the store the night before and slipped on a wet floor. Ben initially believes him, because he was working the night before and remembers checking him out. He also remembers mopping the floor that night.
Ben Neglected Health and Safety
Ben usually waits an hour before closing to mop, starting with the less busy areas first and finishing with the busier ones like the main entrance.
But on this particular night, it was super busy, and Ben forgot to put up the wet floor signs after mopping one aisle.
They Wrote Him Up
He admits that it was his mistake. He got written up for it, so it is entirely possible that the man did slip and fall.
But This Guy Was Lying
However, as the interaction went on, it became increasingly clear that the man was lying. He claimed that he slipped and fell in aisle X and knocked over a whole shelf of things.
Things Couldn’t Get Any Crazier
Aisle X happened to be right next to the counter where Ben was, and it was an aisle for car parts, sprays, flashlights, and heavy, loud things.
His Story Didn’t Add Up
Yet neither Ben nor his supervisor heard anything. The man also claimed that he told Ben what had happened, but he didn’t. All he did was buy his Dr. Pepper and leave.
He also claimed to have a recording of himself falling and of Ben’s supervisor admitting to seeing him fall.
Where Was This Video?
This angered Ben’s supervisor, and he called the man out on his lies. The man got louder and claimed to know who their district manager was, and threatened them that his uncle was a lawyer!
He threatened to sue both the company and Ben’s supervisor for his attitude!
He Wanted Them to Get Angry
It was clear that the man was trying to provoke a fight so he could claim they were being hostile.
Ben’s manager stepped in to separate the two. Ben stayed with the manager because the man wasn’t calming down, and he didn’t want to leave his manager alone with him.
Why Wouldn’t He Give His Details?
When the manager tried to file a complaint, the man refused to give his name or any other information. He only shouted that he was going to sue and get all three of them fired.
Why Did They Write Him Up?
Ben got written up. There was a store meeting, but he wasn’t sure if it was related to the incident.
A Frustrating Encounter
Later, Ben’s manager admitted that there was nothing on the camera, and he and his supervisor discussed the incident. They both agreed that the man came in looking for a fight, and that much of his story didn’t make sense.
He Wanted a Fight
The man’s behavior was terrible, and he seemed to have a chip on his shoulder from the start. Ben and his coworkers did everything they could to diffuse the situation, but the man was determined to cause trouble!
The customer’s behavior was so bad that he even scared off another customer.
They Responded Well
It’s a shame that people like him exist, but it’s a reminder to always be on guard when dealing with difficult customers.
Despite the man’s threats, Ben and his coworkers did their best to handle the situation professionally and with integrity.
