Biden wants to transition America to electric vehicles, but his own Secretary of Energy ran into issues trying to take an electric car on a multi-state road trip. Here’s the full story.
Four-Day Road Trip
The United States Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, set out on a four-day road trip from North Carolina to Tennessee in an electric vehicle.
The purpose of her road trip was “to draw attention to the billions of dollars the White House is pouring into green energy and clean cars.”
Granholm said the trip was “painstakingly mapped out ahead of time to allow for charging.” One planned stop for a “fast charge” was Grovetown, Georgia.
Not Enough Plugs
The team driving ahead of Granholm and her caravan of electric vehicles arrived in Grovetown only to realize there weren’t enough charging plugs.
The station had four chargers, and one was out of service, so one of Granholm’s staff members parked a non-electric vehicle next to a working charger to reserve the space for Granholm.
Police Were Called
This did not sit well with a family who needed to charge their electric vehicle. It was a “sweltering day,” and the family had a baby in the car, so they called the police to intervene.
Police Couldn’t Help
In Georgia, it is not illegal for a non-electric vehicle to park in a charging spot, so the police couldn’t help.
Make It Right
The Energy Department staff tried to make things right with the family. Some vehicles were sent to slower chargers so the family and Granholm could charge up simultaneously.
Slow chargers presented another problem for Granholm and her team on the road trip. An NPR reporter on the journey with Granholm said she “came away with a major takeaway: electric vehicles that aren’t Teslas have a road trip problem.”
Funding for Charging Infrastructure
The White House knows it’s critical to resolve the charging issue. The federal government announced $7.5 billion in funding to improve electric vehicle charging stations.
Biden Will Increase Charging Infrastructure
Currently, there are approximately 15,000 active charging ports in the US. President Biden’s goal is to have at least 500,000 charging ports in the US by the year 2030.
Half Electric by 2030
Biden also wants half of all vehicle sales to be electric by 2030.
Trump Speaks Out
The Trump Campaign said that the president’s electric vehicle mandate would “murder the US auto industry and kill countless union auto-worker jobs.”
Biden Announces Transition
Joe Biden posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying, “We’re going to transition to an electric vehicle future made in America — and it will protect and expand good union jobs.”
America Isn’t Ready
Several comments suggested that America “isn’t ready for that.” One lady said she owns an electric vehicle and told Biden the charging infrastructure “needs to be addressed before it gets out of hand.”
While some were worried about making the transition too quickly, one lady said she “couldn’t wait” for the change and that it was “about time.”
Another X user was concerned about the price of electric vehicles. He said, “So long as it’s pocket-friendly.”
“Hefty” Price Tag
Others showed the same concern about an electric vehicle’s “hefty price tag.”
One X user praised Biden for his efforts to “transition to electric vehicles made in the USA.” He said it was a “commendable step towards a sustainable and prosperous future.”
Only for the Rich and Powerful
After reading the story about the Secretary of Energy having issues at charging stations on her road trip, one person suggested that electric vehicles will only work for “rich, powerful people.”
