A young woman recently asked Reddit for opinions after she refused to cover for a coworker on a big project. That request came with a side order of guilt trip that left Redditors shaking their heads. Here is the full story.
She Has Her Life in Order
OP is a single 28-year-old woman with no children. She works in the logistics auditing division of an internal auditing company.
They Assess the Efficiency of Different Companies
OP’s team assesses the efficiency of different companies by shadowing their workers in various roles across the organization. Sometimes, that means working night shifts and getting involved with delivery, warehouse, and manufacturing operations.
They Have to Hit the Road
And, when the hiring company is in a different town, that means members of OP’s team have to travel for their work.
But They Have Flexibility
Aside from the requirements to travel to customer sites, OP’s team has the flexibility to choose when and where they work as long as their reports are submitted on time. Their manager and team leader is very flexible and supportive.
She Dodges the Hard Stuff
Over the past six years, one of OP’s 30-something female coworkers has consistently made efforts to minimize her workload.
She has frequently avoided tasks that require more physical effort or demanding travel because of pregnancy, maternity leave, vacations, and sickness.
She Has Amazing Timing
OP is amazed by how this coworker’s illnesses, in particular, always seem to line up with the team’s most heavy duty workloads.
She Leans on Her Team
And when she is in the office, OP’s coworker constantly tries to offload her work on colleagues. Her standard excuse is that she has to take care of something for her five kids and needs someone to cover for her.
But She Refuses
While other team members often step in to cover for her, OP has refused to take on any of the other woman’s work over the years.
She Drew the Long Straw
Recently, the team was assigned to audit a larger company located in another city, requiring some members to stay there for three weeks. OP drew the task of data organization and analysis, which she can do from the office or her home.
There Was No Dodging This One
The coworker who likes to avoid work, meanwhile, was assigned to be onsite for the duration of the project.
For the first time that OP can remember, that coworker didn’t have a built-in excuse for skipping out, so she was stuck with the assignment.
She Found Her Next Victim
So the woman went back to her old ways of looking for someone else to do her work. This time, OP was her target, since OP was scheduled to work from home.
She Wanted to Trade
So the other woman approached OP and requested that they switch roles for the project. She said she couldn’t leave her five kids alone with her husband for three weeks.
She Couldn’t Afford It
OP immediately said no and suggested the other woman should look into paying for childcare during her time away.
But the coworker shot that down, saying the cost would be more than she made for the entire time she was away.
She Tried a Guilt Trip
The work-shirker even tried to lay a guilt trip on OP by pointing out she doesn’t have any responsibilities outside of work, so traveling wouldn’t cost her anything.
They Weren’t Her Problem
But OP stood her ground and said her coworker’s kids weren’t her problem. She was definitely not going to trade duties with the other woman.
She’s the Bad Guy
Now OP’s coworker is pouting and telling everyone how selfish OP is. Some of OP’s other coworkers are telling her that she doesn’t understand how hard it is to be a mother.
