Little Roo’s Children Boutique in Chaska faced a wave of backlash for hosting a family-friendly drag storytime event. Here’s the full story.
“Top Favorite Haters”
Taking to TikTok, Little Roo’s showcased their “top favorite haters” and became a viral sensation, capturing the hearts of thousands of supporters worldwide.
The Viral Video
The videos posted by Little Roo’s on TikTok quickly gained traction, accumulating thousands of likes and comments. One video, in particular, garnered over 11 million views.
Looking Out for Kids
In the widely viewed clip, a woman complained about the event, claiming she was “looking out for the kids” and threatened to report the store to the city council.
The Event Violated City Ordinances
She said she was a lawyer and that the drag event violated city ordinances.
The Store Replied
In response, a Little Roo employee calmly wished the woman a nice day.
Was It Against the Law?
The woman retorted by stating, “You can’t have sexually-based entertainment for kids. Everyone knows that.”
No Law Was Broken
However, it was later reported that hosting a drag story time event did not violate any Chaska city ordinances, as confirmed by the Star Tribune.
Protecting the Children
In another video, Little Roo’s owner, Marissa Heid-Nordling, recounted an incident where another woman entered the store through an employee-only entrance, claiming to be “protecting the children.”
It Was Inappropriate
She loudly insisted that the drag performer would be exposing the children to inappropriate content during story time.
The Proud Boy Also Showed Up
Plus, some members of the far-right neo-fascist organization, Minnesota Proud Boys, showed up at the event, spewing hateful remarks about children being “sexualized” and “groomed.”
The Store Has Many Supporters
Despite this distressing presence, Heid-Nordling emphasized that the store received an overwhelming outpouring of love from numerous supporters.
The immense support came as a surprise, surpassing any expectations they had.
Supporters Filled the Parking Lot
One video showcased the parking lot outside Little Roo’s filled with families and supporters holding up Pride and rainbow flags, forming a protective barrier against the haters.
The Videos Were the Reasons
Many attendees revealed that the TikTok videos had motivated them to show up and support their local shop, standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
It Was Shocking
Jen Hennen, a participant at the drag story time event, expressed shock at the level of backlash present in their own community.
They Still Attended the Event to Show Their Support
Despite this, the Hennen family attended the event to demonstrate their support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Raising Children in an Open Environment
They firmly believe in raising their son in an environment that champions love over hate.
Social Media Users Expressed Their Thoughts
Several social media users shared their thoughts on the incident.
One TikTok user wrote, “As a Chaska resident, this equally breaks my heart that you had to deal with this and makes me proud to have you in our town to spread love.”
You Need a Police Presence
Another user commented, “Please get police presence if possible just in case for safety reasons! Hate has gotten so out of hand. I’m sorry you have to deal with people like this.”
