President Joe Biden’s recent speech at a campaign reception in Manhattan has reignited concerns about his cognitive health. Here’s the full story.
The Speech
During the event, the 80-year-old president recalled a story related to the August 2017 riot in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Events of the Charlottesville Riot
Addressing a crowd of supporters, President Biden recounted the disturbing events of the Charlottesville riot, saying, “You remember those folks walking out of the fields literally carrying torches, with Nazi swastikas, holding them forward, singing the same vicious, antisemitic bile – the same exact bile – bile that was sung in – in Germany in the early ’30s. And a young woman was killed. A young woman was killed.”
Biden Spoke About Trump
He went on to mention former President Donald Trump’s response to the incident when he was in office, saying, “The former guy [then-President Donald Trump] was asked, ‘What do you think would happen?’ He was the sitting president.
And he said, ‘I thought there were some very fine people on both sides.’ And I mean this sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, that’s when I decided I – I was going to run again.”
The Concerns
However, what raised concern was that around 20 minutes later, President Biden repeated nearly the exact same details of the story, with minor variations in wording.
Biden Repeated the Same Thing
He repeated, “You know, you may remember that you know, those folks from Charlottesville, as they came out of the fields and carrying those swastikas and remember the ones with the torches and the Ku – accompanied by the Ku Klux Klan.
And in addition to that, they had – there were white supremacists. Anyway, they were making a big case about how terrible this was. And a young woman was killed in the process.”
Biden Even Repeated the Lines About Trump
President Biden continued, “And my predecessor, as I said, was asked what he thought. He said, ‘There are some very fine people on both sides.’
Well, that kept ringing in my head,” he said. “And so, I couldn’t, quite frankly, remain silent any longer.”
The Decision
“So, I decided I would run. And it became – I ran because I thought everything this country stood for was up for grabs for the first time in my career,” he added.
What Experts Say
Mental health experts have noted that repeating words, phrases, or stories in a short time frame can be a potential sign of dementia or Alzheimer’s.
This Is Not the First Time
This incident is not an isolated one, as President Biden has faced scrutiny for various verbal gaffes during his public speeches. These gaffes have led to growing worries about his mental health from people across the political spectrum.

Several social media users shared their thoughts on the incident. One Twitter user wrote, “If he had an ounce of honor or dignity he would resign. He must now be impeached for the good of the country.”
