Coworker’s Racist Actions Lead To Her Million Dollar Debt, Earning Her the Label of “International Criminal”

Two years back, Delilah found herself drawn into a fascinating and, admittedly, bizarre situation. It involved contracts, international travel, and an unsavory character by the name of Mary. Let’s delve into Delilah’s exciting tale!

Escaping Depression

Following her graduation, Delilah found herself living at her mother’s house due to the COVID lockdown. At the time, she was wrestling with depression and existential dilemmas.

To help manage the monotony of life, she had taken up a mundane job in her hometown. She squirreled away savings in the hope of a better future.

Delilah’s mother was a traveling healthcare worker who often worked away on assignments all over the US, each lasting eight weeks to nine months.

As a result of her frequent travel, she accrued a massive amount of airline miles. She often gifts these miles to Delilah so the mother-daughter duo can enjoy quality time together.

A Mother’s Heartfelt Request

Recently Delilah’s mother landed her first overseas contract on a tropical island. The contract, a six-month stint from June to November, was a welcome change from the usual stateside assignments.

However, three months into her contract, she started to feel the downside of living on a secluded island – loneliness. She missed Delilah, and so she made a heartfelt request. She asked Delilah to take a break from her job and join her on the island.

Delilah, eager for a change of scenery and a chance to be with her mother, immediately agreed. They quickly arranged for her passport renewal and booked a ticket.

This is where Mary enters the story. Mary, Delilah’s mother’s coworker, was also a US-based traveling healthcare worker on the island. Mary’s presence on this tropical paradise, however, wasn’t as harmonious as Delilah’s or her mother’s.

Mary’s Disturbing Attitude

Mary was, for lack of a better term, a diehard racist. She found it difficult to enjoy the breathtaking island, with its crystal blue waters and white sand beaches, not because it lacked luxury but because she was surrounded by people of color!

Prejudice in Paradise

Mary was repulsed at the prospect of treating native islanders at the local hospital and recoiled at the sight of skin pigmentation.

Even the opportunity to relax at the beach after work or the luxury of living in a multi-million-dollar vacation home couldn’t mask her prejudice.

From Disgruntled Employee to Fugitive

As Delilah’s mother’s contract neared its end, Mary found herself in a conundrum. Her contract still had a month to go, but her eagerness to escape was palpable.

The Company Was Not Willing to Budge

Despite her efforts to renegotiate an early termination of her contract, the company was not willing to budge. Frustrated, Mary packed her bags and fled to the US without fulfilling her contractual obligations.

Unforeseen Consequences

Mary assumed she could simply forfeit her remaining paycheck and be done with it.

However, she had overlooked one crucial detail – her contract stated that she would be compensated for her lodging only if she fulfilled her duties.

A Million-Dollar Mistake

Having abandoned her contract midway, she was liable to pay back the country’s health ministry for the several months of rent they had covered for her luxurious accommodation.

This put her in dire financial straits, owing a sum speculated to be upwards of a million dollars!

The Unexpected Turn

Returning to the US, Mary transitioned from being a disgruntled employee to an actual fugitive!

Mary, confident that she was safe unless she returned to the island ignored the hefty debt she had accrued. But the island’s government had other plans.

The Island’s government reached out to their counterparts in the US, asking them to flag Mary’s passport until she cleared her debts or faced the legal charges. Unfortunately for Mary, the US agreed.

Mary’s Prejudice Leaves Her Stuck in the US

As a result, Mary was unable to leave the United States. Her attempts to vacation in Mexico were thwarted at the border.

Mary had unknowingly transformed from a disgruntled healthcare worker into an international criminal barred from international travel due to her shortsightedness and racial prejudice!

Vacation Irony

The irony of her wanting to visit Mexico, a nation teeming with the very people she so openly discriminated against, wasn’t lost on Delilah.

Karma Strikes Back

Once again, karma won out in the end. After all is said and done, it’s good to remember that no matter how badly you may have messed up a job, at least you’re not barred from international travel like Mary!
