In a compelling and emotional plea, a 19-year-old woman, Chloe Cole, addressed Congress, urging them to halt gender-reassignment therapies and surgeries for minors. Here’s the full story.
She Recounted Her Journey
Before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government, Cole recounted her journey, explaining, “I used to believe that I was born in the wrong body,” a belief that was reinforced by trusted adults in her life, leading to what she described as “lifelong, irreversible harm.”
A Victim
She said, “I speak to you today as a victim of one of the biggest medical scandals in the history of the United States of America.
She Hopes This Will Change Things
She added, “I speak to you in the hope that you will have the courage to bring the scandal to an end and ensure that other vulnerable teenagers, children, and young adults don’t go through what I went through.”
Pleading With Lawmakers
Cole pleaded with lawmakers to reconsider the approach taken with minors, especially during adolescence and puberty.
Gender-Affirming Care Is Supported by the Government
The Biden administration has been supportive of “gender-affirming care,” with Assistant Secretary of Health Rachel Levine, a transgender woman herself, asserting the importance and value of such procedures.
She Is Against It
Chloe argued against the notion of telling young children that they were born wrong and encouraging them to reject their own bodies.
Stop Telling This to Children
She said, “We need to stop telling children that puberty is an option. That they can choose what kind of puberty they will go through just like they can choose what clothes to wear or music to listen to. Puberty is a rite of passage to adulthood, not a disease to be mitigated.”
She Wanted to Become a Boy
Opening up about her own experience, Cole revealed that at the age of 12, she felt uncomfortable during puberty and expressed her desire to transition and become a boy to her parents.
They Sought Counsel From Specialists
Subsequently, her parents sought advice from specialists, who diagnosed her with gender dysphoria and initiated puberty blockers and testosterone therapy when she was just 13.
She Felt It Was Forced
Cole disclosed that the decision to undergo these interventions felt like coercion, with one specialist even posing the distressing question to her parents, “Would you rather have a dead daughter or a living transgender son?”
She Had Surgery
At the age of 15, Cole underwent a double mastectomy, a decision she now deeply regrets.
The Results Were Overwhelming
The aftermath of the surgery caused permanent changes to her body, with her voice becoming deeper, jawline sharper, nose longer, and her bone structure permanently masculinized.
It Took a Toll on Her
She shared the physical and emotional toll was immense, leading her to describe herself as feeling like a “monster” when she looks in the mirror.
“I had a huge part of my future womanhood taken from me. I will never be able to breastfeed,” she added.
She Is Feeling Better Now
Cole expressed gratitude for being in a better place mentally, but the fact that her parents almost faced the very nightmare they sought to avoid due to medical interventions weighed heavily on her heart.
The Full Context
While Chloe’s experience is certainly distressing, it is important to note that an estimated 90+% of people who transition are happy with the changes and do not express a desire to detransition.
Common Reasons Cited for Detransitioning
The most common reasons cited for detransitioning include pressure from a parent, difficulty getting a job, or experiencing harassment or discrimination because of transitioning.
The Only Recognized Effective Treatment
Social or physical gender transition is currently the only recognized effective treatment for gender dysphoria, and people experiencing gender dysphoria must generally pass extensive evaluations before they are permitted to undergo surgery.
