A man shared his tale of petty revenge with the Reddit community recently, and it went viral. His story is one many can empathize with – being paid less than your colleagues yet doing a lot more work! Luckily he had a plan for revenge.
A Tale From Retail
Brandon worked at a retail store selling electronics for six years and had worked at RadioShack for several years before working at this particular store.
He was very good at his job and had years of experience. He had extensive knowledge of all the carriers and hardware, and he knew all the ins and outs of selling cell phones.
The Fix-It Guy
Over the years, he had become the “fix-it” guy in the store, solving complicated issues and fixing broken accounts. Even the “Geek Squad” would seek him out anytime someone had a phone problem.
He Knew Everything
Brandon trained 12 employees, his assistant manager, and his direct manager on how to sell phones and how the systems worked.
An Expert in the Field
His dedication and expertise were unmatched, and his contributions to the store were invaluable.
But They Were Messing Him About
However, despite his efforts, Brandon realized he was making less money than the new hires he had trained.
He’s Being Unfairly Paid
He had been working at the store for three years, and the highest pay for his job role at the time was $17.50/hour. Meanwhile, the new hires were making $16/hour, and Brandon was making $15/hour!
He Was Doing More Than His Role Required
Brandon wasn’t happy about the pay discrepancy, especially since he was doing more than was required of his role.
It Was Outrageous!
He frequently acted as the de-facto manager for his department since his manager always asked for his opinion on phone-related issues and immediately enacted his advice.
Brandon decided to make a reasonable request to the store’s general manager, Paul. He asked Paul to put him on the higher end of the pay scale, which was still within his job role’s salary range.
A Good Case for a Rise
Brandon presented his case to Paul, emphasizing that he was making less than the new hires despite his three years of tenure.
He reminded Paul that he had trained all the new hires, his assistant manager, and his manager. Brandon pointed out that he was a valuable asset to the team since he knew every nuance of his job.
But the Excuses Began to Flow
However, Paul was unresponsive and offered many excuses as to why they couldn’t pay Brandon fairly. He also offered platitudes as to why Brandon should be content with what he was getting.
Paul’s lack of empathy and understanding left Brandon feeling undervalued and underappreciated.
Time for Revenge!
Brandon was fed up. He had tuned Paul out by minute two of his monologue and was already internally planning his revenge.
He decided to quit the job, but he wanted to do it in a way that would hurt Paul and the store. He planned to quit the day before Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
He Found a New Job First
In October, Brandon started job hunting and made sure he had interviews lined up. He landed a job that paid more and put the wheels of his plan in motion.
And Then He Handed His Notice In
Two days before Black Friday, Brandon rolled up to Paul and informed him of his imminent departure. He was very pleased to get the exact reaction he was hoping for.
Paul’s eyes went wide, and his face went even whiter. He didn’t sputter, but his voice did crack slightly. He was desperately trying to keep his composure.
Paul Just Cares About His Store
Paul: Well, that’s a shame… Right before Black Friday?
Brandon: Yep. Normally, I’d give two weeks’ notice, but these are the circumstances, I’m afraid.
Paul: Well, is there anything we can do to get you to stay?
Brandon: Well, you could’ve bumped my pay when I asked. But as it stands right now, no.
Paul: …
Brandon: Welp, good luck with Black Friday.
Simple Yet Effective
Brandon’s revenge was simple but effective. He knew that the store would be overwhelmed with customers, and they wouldn’t be able to handle the volume without him.
He was the “fix-it” guy, after all. He knew the ins and outs of the store’s operations.
Black Friday Shenanigans
On Black Friday, Brandon went shopping like any other customer. He picked up a rain jacket for a great price and then swung by his old employer for a cheap TV.
The chaos in the store was palpable, and Brandon couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that he was no longer a part of it!
He didn’t regret his decision to quit, and he knew that he had made the right choice.
The Right Choice in the End
Brandon’s new job may have been more lucrative, but it was also more soul-sucking. He eventually moved on to his current job, which is both lucrative and fun.
Brandon knew that his revenge was petty, but it was satisfying. He felt like he had taken control of the situation and had asserted himself.
He wasn’t going to let anyone undervalue him anymore.
