A post about a father-son fallout went viral on Reddit. On seeing it, the son says his dad, the Original Poster(OP), is dead to him. However, OP thinks time will tell if his ever-needy child means what he says.
Back to His Hometown
After moving away to college, OP’s young son got married. Before they had finished their degrees, he and his new wife dropped out of college and returned to his hometown.
A Plea for Caution
Before the wedding took place, OP tried to persuade his son to give marriage a second thought and wait a while as he was still very young.
He felt his son was too immature and wasn’t ready for such a huge life commitment. The son failed to heed his father’s advice and, not too long later, got married.
Young Couple Embraces Parenthood
At the age of 20, the newlyweds welcomed a beautiful little girl. And 16 months later, they added a baby boy to the family.
A Not-So-Wedded Bliss
Shortly after the birth of their second baby, OP’s son and daughter-in-law called it quits.
Neglected Signs of Real Struggles
OP and his wife had noticed their daughter-in-law struggled after the birth of her first child. But they dismissed their concerns, thinking it was postpartum depression.
Strong Bond With In-Laws
Regardless of her struggles, the daughter-in-law developed a strong relationship with OP and his wife.
She often brought the kids to their family home to play with them. And in one of her visits, she began discussing why their marriage was struggling.
Son’s Blame Game
OP knew there were always two sides to a story, but he knew his son too well to discard what his daughter-in-law was saying.
OP tried on several occasions to talk to his son about his marriage but his son refused to take responsibility. He would instead blame his ex for everything.
A Broken Family
Initially, they tried counseling but after a year the daughter-in-law filed for divorce. Not long after the divorce, the son announced on Facebook he was in a new relationship. And shortly after that, he was engaged again.
Abandoned but Never Alone
The daughter-in-law was left to care for the kids on her own. OP and his wife provided her with financial assistance to help care for their grandkids.
A Second Wedding Before the Ink Had Dried
Before the divorce papers were even finalized the son was sending invites to his upcoming wedding.
OP was very disappointed and told his son he would not give his blessing and he would not attend the wedding. His mother told him she would try to convince OP to change his mind.
Banning Family for a Greater Good
OP stayed true to his decision and stood his ground in support of his now ex-daughter-in-law. Out of respect for the mother of his children, OP also banned his son and fiancée from visiting them.
On the day of the wedding day, OP took his ex-daughter-in-law out to distract her from the event.
An Ultimate Betrayal?!
The son called OP the following day to relay how terrible he was as a parent for not attending his wedding.
And when he found out that OP had spent the evening with his ex-wife, he was furious. He called it “the ultimate form of betrayal.”
Son’s Unreasonable Demands
He also said OP and his sister would have to earn their spots back in his life on his terms.
Reddit Reacts
The post was quickly responded to by Redditors with their viewpoints. One comment stated that a girlfriend was acquired only 3 days later and eventually became a fiancée after a month.
It was mentioned by OP that there are always two sides to a story, and more information could potentially change the decision, however, the Redditor believed that this was not one of those situations.
Redditor Noticed Disturbing Behavior
Another Redditor said that the son is honestly giving either narcissistic or even potentially abusive vibes.
Unfortunately, she felt bad for his ex-wife. It was thought that it’s good that he’s seeing boundaries from OP and his sister because he sounds like he needs more experience being told no or that he’s wrong.
Was OP wrong for not going to his son’s wedding? What is your take on the entire story?
