He Called His Wife a Lazy, Terrible Mother After She Refused to Be a “Good Housewife,” but There’s More to the Story Than Meets the Eye

A Reddit user caused a stir when he asked if he was wrong about a family-related conflict. The Original Poster (OP), a 57-year-old man, accused his 51-year-old wife of being lazy and neglecting their family.

The couple, who have been married for 28 years and have a 25-year-old son together, have been at odds over the wife’s refusal to cook and do household chores.

OP inherited a family business and works long hours to provide for the family and expects at least a home-cooked dinner after a hard day’s work.

But his stay-at-home wife spends her days shopping and hanging out with friends instead of caring for the house.

The Situation Comes to the Boil

The situation came to a head recently when OP came home from work and found that his wife had done nothing all day.

He snapped and told her that he was sick of her not doing anything while he was providing for their family.

Hidden Anger Surfaces

The argument escalated, and the wife let him know she thought he was to blame for the loss of their daughter.

OP was shocked to hear this as they had not lost their child. Rather he had recently paid for their child’s transition surgery and supported them throughout the process but that wasn’t the case for the mother.

An Unsupportive Mother

Their child was initially born female but chose to transition to male.

The wife was offended by the choice and wanted a girl instead, her unsupportive attitude toward their transgender child had been a source of tension in their relationship for some time.

It could be this that’s causing the friction in the house.

OP expects his wife to cook and clean, even though they have a housekeeper who comes twice a week.

And when she fails to meet those expectations, he becomes angry and accuses her of laziness.

His wife cared for their son when he was little and took on writing as a hobby, but she gave it up because she found it challenging.

Now that their son is an adult, she spends her days shopping and hanging out with friends.

Is It Time for Divorce?

OP insists that he is not sexist and that his wife chose to be a stay-at-home mom, is now considering divorce.

The Family Is Torn

Half of their family members are siding with him, and the other half with his wife. Their son, still in college, is also split in his loyalties.

The Advice Redditors Gave

Redditors raised a few questions about how the couple had stayed together so long. One even questioned the wife’s stand on happenings within the family.

One user wanted to know if this was enough grounds for the man to win in court since he’s decided to file a divorce case.

The commenter further suggested that the man might have to stop paying for the son’s college fees if they ever went to court with a subject like this.

What About Counseling First?

One particular comment stood out from the rest, they said, “I think you both should go get some kind of therapy, whether that be family, marriage, and/or individual,” they said.

Need to Share Household Chores

The commenter also advised, “that the wife gets a job and volunteers for some charity, and the family needs to share some of the household chores to help them foster a few common grounds.”

Then they added, “Not at fault for wanting a better home life overall, but you should practice better and regular communication so that you don’t blow up all at once when you finally snap.”

What Would You Do?

Was the OP wrong for calling his wife a lazy, awful parent?? Or was he overreacting for no reason at all? How would you react in this situation?
