“Homophobic” Song Goes Viral, and Creator Claims Intention Was Not to Mock the LGBTQ+ Community – Yet Listeners and Critics Are Torn

In a recent Reddit post, Max faced controversy over a homophobic song he created, torn between removing it to respect concerns or standing his ground as the creator.

Max made a parody EDM video a few months ago, which went semi-viral, drawing attention for its humorous take on homophobia.

An Unofficial Sequel

The video was an unofficial sequel to David Guetta’s Solves Racism video but with homophobia instead.

The video went viral, and encouraged by its reception; Max decided to release the song he made for the video. The video sampled Macklemore’s “Same Love” and incorporated a catchy techno beat.

The Homophobic Lyrics

The lyrics playfully revolved around the line “When I was in the third grade, I thought I was gay,” followed by a repetition of “gay, gay, gay, gay” before transitioning into the energetic beat.

It Was Not Meant to Mock Anyone

Max said that the intention behind the song was not to mock the LGBTQ+ community or any other marginalized group but rather to parody the commodification of social justice and highlight the silliness of those who exploit serious issues for personal gain.

Things Turned Ugly

However, things took a turn when one of Max’s close friends, who happens to be gay, expressed strong disapproval of the song, perceiving it as “disgusting” and disrespectful to the LGBTQ+ community.

Also, his friend said that sampling Martin Luther King Jr.’s words could be offensive to the black community, even though the friend himself was not black.

Max strongly disagreed, saying that he was not making fun of these communities.

Everyone Else Found It Funny

He mentioned that his other gay friend loved the song and found it hilarious, and he even heard it played at a Pride event in LA, which surprised him.

But, as someone who is neither gay nor black, Max hesitated to assert his own judgment about what may or may not be offensive to these communities.

His friend’s boyfriend took a strong stance, refusing to speak with Max unless he took down the song.

As a result, Max took to Reddit to ask whether he was wrong for refusing to take down the song.

Redditors were split in their views, one user commented, “Just ignore him. For every person who thinks it’s offensive, there will be 12 more who think it’s hilarious and not offensive at all.”
