They Were Invited to His Friend’s BBQ Party, and He Refused to Bring Food! Is He in the Wrong?

Social gatherings, such as BBQs, are occasions for friends and family to come together and enjoy each other’s company. However, conflicting expectations and cultural differences can create misunderstandings and discomfort. In a recent Reddit post, a user found himself questioning whether he was in the wrong for refusing to bring food to a friend’s BBQ after being repeatedly asked to do so.

The Original Poster (OP), a 29-year-old, and his 28-year-old fiancée were invited to a friend’s BBQ last week.

It’s Not the First Time

OP shared two previous incidents where their friend, Lexie, had invited them to a BBQ.

The First Time

The first two times she called OP’s fiancée, she asked that they “just bring some food for the BBQ.” OP told her they would bring some burgers and sausages, nothing extravagant.

The BBQ Was Empty

The problem began when they arrived at Lexie’s place for the first BBQ, and her family — two daughters and her partner — were all present. The BBQ was lit but empty.

Who’s Hosting?

It turned out that because they were hosting, they expected OP to provide the food for everyone. OP says he didn’t think this was common. However, they did have enough food to feed everyone, but the barbecue wasn’t great.

The Second Time

The second time, the same conversation took place, and OP took a little less food as it was a slightly last-minute plan. OP and his fiancée had previously been at lunch a couple of hours before the event.

They Were Disappointed

Lexie and her partner looked disappointed by the fact that OP hadn’t brought as much food. OP says he didn’t care about their looks and only had one burger so they could have more food between them.

Lexie invited them for a BBQ again last week for the third time.

However, this time OP declined to bring anything since he thought they could at least set out some chips or something.

Tension Sets In

But the mood shifted when they went to the BBQ, and Lexie and her family realized he hadn’t brought any food.

A Sudden Store Trip

As a result, Lexie proposed to OP to go to the store to buy some supplies. OP answered, “No problem, I’ll drive and come with you.”

His Friend Expected Him to Pay

When they reached the register to pay for the items, she stared at OP instead of paying for the food that she had selected, including the expensive meats, buns, crisps, etc.

But OP downright refused. And when they got back to Lexie’s place, OP left right away with his partner.

OP felt bad about what happened, and he took to Reddit to ask if he was in the wrong. Hundreds of Redditors commented and showed their support for OP, saying that he was not wrong and that this is not common.
