This story of petty revenge is a great read. A man takes us back to the 1970s with the story of how their friend taught a snobbish car salesman that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover!
A Tale of Petty Revenge
The original poster (OP) worked at a small company with his colleague, a smart and unconventional friend, Doug.
He Had a Keen Interest in Cars
It was in the 1970s when they worked together, and Doug, being an electrical engineer, had a keen interest in cars and their modifications.
A Super Smart Guy
He was a street-smart fellow who had built a street-legal dune buggy from scratch while still in high school.
Jack of All Trades
He was a true example of a person who could fix anything and everything.
He had even started attending community college to pursue a degree, but he soon realized he knew more than the teacher, so he decided to drop out.
A Cash Windfall Comes His Way
Their company was bought by a bigger firm, and they all received a windfall of cash from their stock options.
OP used the money to buy a new car outright and put a down payment on a house, but Doug, who had always dreamt of driving a fancy car, decided to use the money to fulfill his lifelong desire.
A Unique Individual
He went to a Fancy Car Dealer that sold Jaguars, Mercedes-Benz, BMWs, and many other high-end cars.
Doug was an unconventional-looking person. He was tall and skinny, had long hair that went down to his shoulders, and sported a bushy beard.
He wore jeans, a light-colored shirt, and a denim jacket, which was before designer jeans became fashionable for men.
A Stange Look
He never looked dirty, but he had the look of someone who had come down from the top of a mountain looking for a good time.
He was almost always in a good mood, and he had a goofy grin on his face.
They Were Ignoring Him!
As soon as he entered the dealership, he began to ask technical questions about the car.
He waited for a salesman to approach him, but after 30 minutes, no one came. The place was not busy, but still, no one seemed to want to help him.
So He Got His Revenge
Doug, being the person he was, decided to come up with a plan for some petty revenge.
He started yelling at the top of his lungs, “I came here to buy a car, and all of you just ignored me. And I was going to pay cash.”
He whipped out the huge stack of $100 bills he had, spread them out, and waved them around for all to see.
“Well, I’m never coming back to this dealership again. I’ll buy my car from another dealer.” And he stormed out, feeling quite pleased with himself.
A Satisfactory Experience
When he returned to work, he told OP and others about his experience, laughing at how funny the situation was.
He had even said that the salespeople’s jaws dropped when he pulled out the wad of cash.
OP was impressed by Doug’s bravery and creativity in dealing with the salesmen’s snobbishness.
Appearances Can Be Deceiving
The whole event made OP reflect on how appearances could be deceiving.
Doug was an unconventional-looking person, and the salesmen had assumed he couldn’t afford to buy their high-end cars.
They had judged him based on his appearance and were wrong. It was a valuable lesson for OP, who realized that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
He’s Proud to Be Friends With Doug
Overall, Doug’s experience at the car dealership showed how a person’s demeanor, attitude, and appearance don’t always reflect their financial capabilities.
OP is proud to be friends with such a smart and unconventional person who could teach him valuable life lessons without even trying.
Redditors Share Their Revenge Stories About Car Dealerships
Redditors shared their bad experiences with car salesmen in the comments. One user said, “Car salespeople get very snobbish, despite the fact that they’re salespeople, no matter the brand.”
“I’ve been told a few times I can’t afford a new car. last one, a 2020 Toyota dealership sales manager said, “You don’t look like the people that can afford a new car.”
“We got up and walked out. they called 10 minutes later to ask what it would take to get the car. I told them my price.”
“A short time later, cashiers checked for the full amount. I got a 2020 model for $1k more than I paid for a 2011 of the same vehicle when it was new.”
What a Rude Salesperson!
Another user added, “My BFF owns a very successful bakery- we walked into a dealership to buy her husband an ATV for Xmas, we had just walked off a 12-hour shift, still in work clothes.
The sales guy pointed blankly said, ‘You can’t afford anything here; I suggest you look at Craigslist for…whatever you are looking for,’ and walked off.”
Revenge Is Sweet
“We stopped by 2 hours later with the New trailer & ATV and bought some nice goggles from the same guy.”
