A person recently asked Reddit whether he was wrong for saying he doesn’t feel bad for his dad. Here’s the full story.
His Father Is a Workaholic
The Original Poster (OP) is a 24-year-old who accused his 61-year-old father of extreme workaholism that has always compromised his ability to be a good dad.
His Father Only Likes to Work
His father is a mechanic and is the owner of a small store where he has spent the most time of his life. OP says he has never liked anything other than working.
He often works seven days a week, putting in an average of 65 hours per week.
He Missed a Lot of Important Family Events
OP mentions that it’s not like he was working additional hours to feed them since they were never truly in financial straits. No matter what day it was, the man didn’t care.
He has missed most of OP’s birthdays, his siblings’ birthdays, and his wedding anniversaries.
He Shares a Story
OP recalls one Christmas when he was around 14. Naturally, the store was closed on Christmas Day, and it would be the following day too.
OP’s dad emphasized that he had to perform inventory rather than wait until the next day. As a result, he spent Christmas alone in his store logging parts rather than with his family.
He Forced Him to Get a Job
As soon as it was legal for OP and his siblings to do so, their dad insisted they get jobs.
And before that, he would drag them down the street to inquire of the neighbors whether they needed the children for any work.
Also, when OP and his siblings were employed, their father sent them a birthday reminder to ask their managers for more hours because OP’s state staggers the maximum hours for young people by year.
He Never Showed Him Love
OP says his father never showed him any affection, and he never paid attention to him unless he needed to assign him some work.
He Says His Father Has No Friends or Hobbies
Aside from work and sleep, his father had no friends, no interests, and no hobbies.
He Is Not Sure Why His Father Married
OP is not sure why his dad bothered having three children, and he says he’s not sure how his mom managed to live with his dad.
Things Started to Catch Up
The years finally got hard for OP’s father a month ago, and after blowing out his back, the doctors informed him he had to retire.
His Father Is Recovering
He is currently recovering at home while attempting to find a part-time job.
He’s Bored
He’s bored to death and has no idea how to pass the time if he’s not working. It’s driving OP’s mother and younger sister crazy.
As a result, he complains about things around the house, tries to fix them, and then orders one of them to do it when he is injured and unable to.
He Goes to See His Dad
OP, therefore, spoke with him when he visited him after he mentioned he was unsure of what to do.
He Said What Was on His Mind
OP simply said, “Look, for 40 years straight you did nothing but work, and you never had fun, what did you expect?
OP went on to say that when you try to work yourself to death, sometimes you pass away in time.
This is what happens and he will need to stop harassing OP’s mother and sister and find something enjoyable to do so that OP doesn’t feel sorry for him.
His Father Became Angry
As a result, he became angry with OP and cursed him. OP left and is now wondering whether he was being too harsh and wrong.
He Didn’t Get Unwavering Support
He took to Reddit to ask for opinions and Redditors were split in their views.
One Reddit user said that OP was not wrong and that his father dedicated his life to his work and now he can’t do it if he spent a fraction of that time on his wife or kids then he wouldn’t be where he is now.
