In a recent Reddit post, a person found herself questioning whether she was being insensitive by wearing tank tops around her gay roommate.
They Have Been Living Together for a Year
The Original Poster (OP) is a 23-year-old who has been living with her 25-year-old roommate for about a year. She always, unless it’s winter, likes to wear tank tops with shorts or sweatpants since they’re comfortable.
She Likes to Wear Tank Tops
Since the day they moved in together, OP has always worn them, but her roommate recently told her that he feels uncomfortable seeing her wear a tank top.
He Told Her Not to Wear Them
He asked OP not to wear them or anything extremely seductive around the house because, as a gay man, he won’t find it attractive.
Those Are Just Her Pajamas
OP was offended by his comment. She mentioned that she never dressed like that and that the tank tops are just her pajamas.
She Didn’t Think It Offended Him
When OP told him this, he told her to remain conscious because he doesn’t like seeing her cleavage-revealing clothing every time he comes home.
OP says they’ve been living together for a year, so she assumed he was fine with it and had no idea that it had troubled him.
She Found It Odd
OP apologized and promised to wear something more covering after reflecting on their chat. But OP found it odd that she couldn’t dress however she wanted within her own home.
The Tank Tops Were Cotton
Plus, the tank tops were cotton and not at all lingerie-like, not even with spaghetti straps.
She Continued Wearing Them
However, OP continued to wear tank tops when it was hot, and her roommate accused OP of being homophobic for doing so around him.
He told her to stop trying to flirt with him, saying, “I’m not attracted to your body.”
Arguments Ensued
He went on to say, “Just because I’m gay doesn’t give you the right to dress as you choose around me.”
She Had No Intention of Flirting With Him
OP said that she had no intention of flirting with him, and she took to Reddit to ask whether she was in the wrong for wearing tank tops.
The Online Community Supported Her
Hundreds of Reddit comments came in support of OP, saying that she was not wrong and that her roommate is projecting his own insecurities onto her.
