This Redditor shared a recent incident involving his mother, who holds devout beliefs. She demanded he stop playing his Pride music while they were in the car.
An Accepting Mother, Albeit With Slight Apprehension
Recently, Elliott, 35 FTM, and his mother, 66, drove to pick up Elliott’s child and a friend of hers from a school event.
Elliott mentioned that although his mother accepts him, she sometimes gives off homophobic vibes.
He Made a Pride Themed Playlist
As it was Pride month, Elliott had created a playlist with a Pride theme called “Got That Gay Panic.”
An LGBTQ Theme
Every song is either about being LGBTQ or was written or performed by an LGBTQ artist.
The Problem Begins
Elliott’s mother first took issue with the song “We’re Here, We’re Queer.” She claimed that the song dropped the three-letter F word and how that was wrong.
“That’s What I Heard”
She said, “Well, that’s what I heard,” when Elliott told her it wasn’t part of the song’s lyrics.
He Ignored Her
Elliott ignored her and continued to drive and listen to his music.
She Was Triggered
Then Laura Bell Bundy’s song “You Can’t Pray The Gay Away” started playing.
She Got Angry With the Song
Elliott’s mother is a devout Christian, and she was furious with the song. Elliott mentioned that the song doesn’t include anything offensive.
It Targets How Pastors Are Wrong
Its lyrics only discuss how pastors are wrong and that you cannot pray yourself gay. There were no bad words; only the D term qualifies as a swear word.
She Told Him to Turn the Music Off
But after hearing that song, his mother forced him to turn the music off.
Elliott replied, “No, I’m going to listen to gay music in my own car during Pride month.”
He Concluded She Was Being Homophobic
She never says anything because she knows Elliott will get upset, and this confirms his suspicion that she is still covertly homophobic.
He Felt Bad
Elliott said he wanted to play a song that contains both profanities and is anti-Christian, but he felt bad and skipped it.
