Alex recently shared her sister’s story on Reddit. Her sister, who is a non-binary teacher, faced a homophobic parent that wouldn’t allow her child to attend their classes and demanded they be fired.
Her Sister Is Non-Binary
Alex’s sister has embraced their identity as non-binary, works as a 7th-grade teacher, and uses the name Echo or Teacher Echo.
An Effort to Create a Welcoming Environment
In an effort to create a welcoming environment, Echo chose not to disclose their last name.
They Present Themselves in a Masculine Manner
Echo presents themselves in a masculine manner but possesses a feminine voice. Their choice of clothing predominantly consists of suits, and they never wear skirts or dresses.
It Doesn’t Impact Their Teaching
Despite these choices, Echo believes that these external aspects are inconsequential to their role as a teacher and the impact they can have on their students’ lives.
A Teacher-Student Relationship
The story began in January when a new student – let’s call her “Jen” – arrived in the 7th grade.
They Were Very Close
Jen liked Echo and respected them for who they were. They were very close and had a good teacher-student relationship.
She Was Questioning Her Gender Identity
Jen, who had been questioning their own gender identity, expressed a desire to be referred to as “Charlie” and use he/they pronouns.
They Supported Them
Sensing Charlie’s vulnerability, Echo respected their wishes and supported them throughout their journey of self-discovery.
Her Mom Is Religious
However, the problem began when Charlie’s mother, Susan, who was religious, discovered what was happening.
Parent-Teacher Meeting
During a parent-teacher meeting, when Echo introduced herself, Susan was speechless and requested to talk with the principal.
She Doesn’t Want Someone Like Echo Teaching Her Child
Susan complained to the principal that she didn’t want “someone like Echo” teaching her kid.
She Wanted to Get Them Fired
She then pulled Charlie out of Echo’s class and told Charlie that she should not attend Echo’s class.
“I Don’t Want My Daughter to Turn Gay”
Susan complained to the board when the principal wouldn’t fire Echo. And she is now trying to get Echo fired, saying “I don’t want my daughter to turn gay.”
The School Didn’t Do Anything About Her Complaints
However, the school didn’t do anything about her complaints as they respected Echo’s identity.
The LGBTQ+ Community Is Facing a Lot of Flack
Alex turned to Redditors for support.
One Reddit user wrote, “If knowing that gay people exist can turn you gay, then why doesn’t knowing that straight people exist turn you straight? Why do people hate their kids so much? They are separate human beings, not clone dolls to play dress up with.”
All the Hate Needs to Stop
Another Redditor commented, “They are going to be fired because it will make it on FOX and all hell will break loose. I hope Echo is prepared. I feel so bad for the LGBTQ+ community right now. All the hate they are getting is unwarranted and needs to stop.”
