In-Laws Becoming Too Much to Handle?
Imagine being in a relationship for a whole year and constantly having to deal with in-laws who don’t respect your beliefs or your nationality.
That’s exactly what happened to this American girl, Sarah – who comes from a Hindu background – and her boyfriend. Right from the start, his parents have been causing trouble, and it’s becoming overwhelming.
Father-In-Law Blasts Her for Following Hindu Tradition
Let’s start with his dad. During a dinner invitation at his dad’s house, things took a strange turn. It was clear that his dad had a preference for his son’s ex-girlfriend over Sarah herself, which is quite odd.
Culturally Insensitive Jokes
To make matters worse, he made odd jokes about Sarah’s Hindu background and her vegetarian lifestyle. Sarah isn’t overly religious, but she doesn’t eat beef due to cultural and religious reasons.
Respecting Her Beliefs
She expected her beliefs to be respected, but his dad kept bringing up the issue of her being vegetarian.
They Should Lie and Hide It
He even suggested that they should lie to her and feed her beef disguised as something else. That didn’t sit well with Sarah because respecting someone’s beliefs should be a given, right?
No Habla Español
On top of that, when his dad’s girlfriend arrived, they completely disregarded Sarah and started conversing in Spanish, even though they all spoke English well and knew Sarah couldn’t understand Spanish. It made her feel excluded and left out.
The Mother Is Just Making It Worse!
But the mom isn’t innocent either. From the very beginning of their relationship, she had a problem with Sarah not being American.
She’s “Not American”
It’s important to note that they are immigrants from South America. Despite being together for a whole year, his mom consistently reminded her son that Sarah wasn’t American and suggested he should find an American partner instead.
Imagine being constantly told that you’re not good enough simply because of your nationality. It’s hurtful and unfair.
No One’s Good Enough for My Son
What’s more, she often interfered in their financial matters, asking her boyfriend how they were managing their finances and making sure Sarah wasn’t taking advantage of him.
As a mother, being protective is understandable, but she has met Sarah multiple times and knows that she comes from a good family and doesn’t need her boyfriend’s money.
“Do Not Hurt My Son”
To make matters worse, she indirectly “threatened” Sarah, saying things like “do not hurt my son” in a condescending manner.
A Terrible Habit
In a stunning contrast, the mom has a peculiar habit of taking things from restaurants without paying for them. It’s downright stealing, and Sarah finds it repulsive.
It’s no wonder Sarah has reached her breaking point. She doesn’t know if it’s right or wrong, but she told her boyfriend that she doesn’t want to have anything to do with his parents anymore.
Sarah has taken to Reddit to see if she’s judging them too quickly or if this level of drama is normal.

Reddit took to the comments section to cast their voice, with one user slamming the boyfriend and his family, “His parents are vile and toxic people. Either, you or your bf will have to make a difficult choice.”

“If he chooses to stand up to his parents and respect you (even if that means cutting ties with them); that would show his maturity and love for you. Otherwise, you need to find someone who knows their priorities.”
