This shaken mom took to Twitter to express her disbelief in this viral thread that showed her child serving detention over Zoom. Taking classes on Zoom has become the norm in recent times, but this mom was appalled to find out that a teacher had made her child sit silently in front of a webcam as a form of detention.
A Fitting Punishment?
Uju Anya recently shared an incident with TikTok after her child was sent to Zoom detention for not paying attention.
“My child got sent to Zoom detention for not paying attention in Zoom 4th grade.” Can you believe it? The consequences for a lack of focus in virtual classrooms are reaching new levels of incredibility.”
But there’s more to this story.
An Ironic Way to Proceed
Uju explained that the teacher had given repeated warnings to their 9-year-old child and even emailed them about the issue beforehand.
The behavior in question? The child’s consistent inability to stay focused during online classes and complete assignments.
Easily Distracted
Uju went on to say, “She frequently gets distracted, plays computer games, ignores the teacher, or just signs off Zoom.”
Uju highlighted the ridiculousness of the situation by saying, “She couldn’t concentrate and stare at one adult on a screen, so she will be disciplined by staring at another. I know we’re all trying our best out here, but man.”
Not Taking Any Chances
Uju chose remote learning as a safety measure during the pandemic and highlights the challenges of attending 4th grade on Zoom.
She highlights the difficulties that teachers face when having to teach online, yet Uju’s disbelief and frustration were apparent as they exclaimed, “But Zoom detention is ridiculous.”
Difficulties With Online Teaching
As the Twitter thread gained attention, Uju expressed their gratitude for the support received.
They clarified that “virtual detention” were the exact words used by the school and emphasized that they would not be sending their child.
It Makes No Sense
Another Twitter user joined in the replies saying, “I’m so sorry. That just does not make any sense at all.”
This user took a hilarious approach, playfully commenting, “That being the case, I’m robbing the nearest bank tomorrow and bracing myself for a long stint in Zoom jail.”
