An advisor to Putin has raised eyebrows this week, after he took to Russian TV to announce that the U.S. is using brainwashing to turn Ukrainians into gay super-soldiers. Here’s what happened.

In a statement that left many political experts scratching their heads, Sergei Markov, an adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, made the outrageous claim that the U.S. is attempting to create gay Ukrainian super-soldiers.
A Zombified Army
Markov asserted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces would be “zombified and unified through gay sex, similar to the ancient Greek Spartans, and subsequently turned into cult members ready to sacrifice themselves.”
Rooted in Russia’s Strategy
At first glance, such claims might be easily dismissed as conspiracy-laden ramblings. However, they are deeply rooted in Russia’s strategy of using anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments to foster nationalist pride and justify its aggressive stance against Ukraine.
Capitalizing on Existing Homophobic Beliefs
By invoking historical references, however misleading they may be, Markov’s narrative attempts to demonize the U.S. and Ukraine, capitalizing on existing homophobic beliefs within Russia.
Historical Distortion
In his appearance on Russian TV, as reported by Newsweek, Markov declared, “Military theorists and historians know which army in Greece was the strongest, remember? The Spartans!
They were united by a homosexual brotherhood. They were all homos. These were the politics of their leadership. I think they are planning the same for Ukraine’s Armed Forces,” Markov didn’t stop there.
Unfounded Allegations
He made even more bizarre allegations, suggesting that the U.S. and Ukraine would employ “neuro-linguistic programming” and brainwashing techniques to involuntarily convert Ukrainian soldiers’ sexual orientation.
Such Claims Are Wholly Unfounded
It should be noted that such claims are wholly unfounded, as there’s zero scientific evidence to suggest that psychological methods can influence or alter someone’s innate sexuality.
Spartans and the Ukrainian Army
By leaning into these historical narratives, Markov appears to be drawing parallels between the Spartans and the current Ukrainian army.
Misrepresentation of History
But is this connection accurate or a deliberate distortion of history? While historical records indicate that Spartan soldiers may have been involved in homosexual relationships, these activities were part of a broader cultural context, not a deliberate political strategy.

Anti-LGBTQ+ Propaganda

This aligns with previous remarks from President Putin, who, in an October 2022 speech, stated that the ongoing conflict with Ukraine was partly driven by the West’s supposed intent to impose gender “perversions” on Russian youth.
