Engaging in open discussions about religion within a family can be challenging, particularly when differing beliefs are involved. In a recent Reddit post, a user shared their experience of feeling frustrated with a very religious family member’s constant talks about God.
He Respects All Other Religions
Brett is an atheistic Satanist who doesn’t believe in God. But he respects all other religions, even if he doesn’t understand or agree with them. In addition, he identifies as a Trans man.
He Came Out
Brett decided to come out to his family on Facebook as they all live apart, and he thought it would be appropriate given that it’s pride month and he’s transitioning socially within the family.
Some Family Members Didn’t Accept Him
However, not everyone accepted his coming out. One devout family member, Dee, responded angrily to his article.
“God Made You a Girl”
Dee told Brett that he is a girl after Brett told her, “I feel more like a boy,” and then she replied, “God made you a girl.”
He Said He Doesn’t Believe in God
In response, Brett shared his personal belief that he does not believe in God while emphasizing his respect for Dee’s beliefs.
Arguments Ensued
However, she continued by saying that if Brett didn’t believe in God, he wouldn’t be able to see his close family member who had passed away. This caused Brett to feel upset and offended.
He Expressed His Frustration
Then Brett expressed his frustration at Dee for using their deceased loved ones as leverage to make him feel guilty for his beliefs.
He Is Planning a Counter-Argument
Now Brett is thinking of telling Dee that if she wants to stay in his family, she needs to accept his beliefs and not bring up grief to try and make him feel bad for not believing in her religion.
Don’t Waste Your Breath
So Brett took to Reddit to ask whether he would be wrong for saying it. Several comments poured in supporting Brett’s decision.
