A school board hearing at Don Lugo High School in Chino, California turned into a highly charged event as over 300 people gathered to discuss a policy requiring teachers to notify parents if their child identifies as transgender. Here’s the full story.
He Fiercely Opposed the Policy
The California State Superintendent of Schools, Tony Thurmond, took the floor and fiercely opposed the policy, leading to a clash with the school board’s president, Sonja Shaw.
They Voted in Favor of the Policy
As emotions ran high, the board eventually voted 4-1 to introduce the parental notification policy, sparking cheers and jeers from the audience.
The Superintendent’s Criticism
As the hearing unfolded, Superintendent Tony Thurmond vehemently criticized the new guidelines, expressing concerns that they put Trans students at risk.
Parents Must Be Notified
The policy, introduced in June, mandates that schools must notify parents within three days after a child identifies as transgender. Plus, teachers must inform parents if their child engaged in any form of violence or discussed suicide.
The Transphobic Policy
Under the policy, students identifying as Trans were defined as those seeking to change their name and pronouns, access gender-based sports, bathrooms, or changing rooms different from their biological gender.
He Voiced His Opposition
During the hearing, Superintendent Thurmond’s allotted time expired, but he continued to voice his opposition, leading to clashes with School Board President Sonja Shaw.
Things Took a Turn
Tensions escalated, and Thurmond was heard interrupting Shaw, who tried to restore order by requesting him to return to his seat.
He Didn’t Stop
Despite this, Thurmond continued speaking, resulting in cheers from his supporters when he sat back down.
Superintendent vs the President
Frustrated by the interruptions, Shaw criticized Thurmond for his role in escalating the debate over transgender students and accused him of supporting her opponent during a previous school board election.
A Deep Divide
The issue of transgender minors sparked a deep divide among parents in attendance, with emotions running high on both sides of the aisle.
Support for Both Sides
Some parents passionately supported the parental notification policy, arguing that parents should be involved in their children’s lives, while others vehemently opposed it, fearing that it could harm vulnerable transgender students.
Parents Voiced Their Concerns
In a highly charged atmosphere, some parents chanted, “Leave our kids alone,” while others held signs calling for Shaw’s recall.
The Policy Should Protect Students
Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident. One Twitter user wrote, “The policy protects students from teachers who’ve crossed a boundary, usurping the role of parents.”
