Two public schools in Seattle, Meany Middle School and Nova High School, are facing criticism for offering free “gender-affirming care” to students as young as 11. Here’s the full story.
The Services Offered
These services are provided through medical centers operated by Country Doctor Community Health Centers (CDCHC), which include referrals for sex-change surgeries, hormone therapy for adolescents, and assistance obtaining mental health letters of support for gender-affirming procedures.

The CDCHC’s stated mission is to promote health in transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse communities by ensuring equal access to gender-affirming medications and procedures.
Why Are Schools Involved?
However, this has raised concerns among parents and advocacy groups, including Parents Defending Education (PDE), who questioned the involvement of schools in providing such care to children.

One of the main concerns expressed is the administration of cross-sex hormones to children as young as 11, despite puberty blockers still being barred for prepubescent individuals.

Over 20 states have banned these procedures for minors, but blue states like Washington continue to support them.
Schools Hid the Services
In addition to the controversial medical services being offered, documents obtained by Parents Defending Education reveal that staff at these schools are instructed to hide students’ gender identity from their parents following Seattle Public School District policy.
The Outrage
Erika Sanzi, the director of outreach at Parents Defending Education, expressed her outrage at schools being involved in gender-affirming care for children.

She stated, “It’s bad enough that medical professionals are prescribing cross-sex hormones and cutting off breasts and genitals of minors. It is a whole new level of awful and terrifying for schools to be involved.”

Critics argue that these treatments can have irreversible effects on children’s bodies and may not fully consider the long-term consequences.

Supporters of gender-affirming care, on the other hand, believe that early intervention can help alleviate the struggles and mental health challenges faced by transgender and gender non-conforming youth.
