Netflix’s hit reality show ‘Selling Sunset’ has captivated audiences with its blend of luxury real estate and dramatic storylines. As viewers indulge in the glamorous world of California realtors, one question lingers: How authentic is it all?

LA Agent Looks at Real Estate System

A Los Angeles real estate agent, Michelle Knutson (@michelleknutson), took to TikTok to share her insider knowledge, leveraging her access to the area’s MLS (Multiple Listing Service) system.

She’s Determined to Find Out

Armed with this data, she set out to determine which cast members were genuinely dedicated to their real estate careers and who might be using the show as a platform for entertainment.

How She Verified the Listings

To verify the information, Narcity cross-checked some of Knutson’s findings with publicly available data on platforms like Zillow. While Knutson had exclusive MLS access, Zillow provided some insights into the cast members’ real estate activities.

Mary Bonnet

According to Zillow records, Mary Bonnet (Fitzgerald) boasts an impressive 15-year tenure in the real estate business. In 2023 alone, she sold two homes, acting as the listing agent for one and representing the buyer for another.

The March sale closed at $902,000, while the May transaction amounted to $410,000. Notably, her most significant sale to date was in July 2022, involving a property worth a staggering $35 million.

The Only Agent She’d Heard Of

Knutson attests, “She’s the one agent I actually heard of being a real estate agent in L.A., myself before the show happened.”

Heather Rae Young El Moussa

Heather, another cast member, proved harder to track on Zillow, but Knutson’s MLS search revealed her involvement in an $18 million home sale within the past year.

Chrishell Stause

Chrishell Stause, who recently welcomed a baby in February, reportedly sold two houses in the last year.

While her Zillow profile only dates back to 2021, it showcases her previous successful transactions, including a notable $4.8 million sale in August 2021.

Emma Hernan

Emma Hernan, a cast member since season 4, has also made her mark in the real estate market. Knutson shares, “Emma has sold two houses in the last year.”

Interestingly, one of the properties she sold is the St. Ives place featured on the show, valued at $7,245,000.

Davina Potratz

The status of Davina, however, raises questions. Knutson reveals, “Davina is no longer listed on the Oppenheim Group roster on our MLS.”

While she still appears as an agent on Zillow and the Oppenheim Group’s website, her absence from the MLS system is intriguing. Zillow records only go back to 2021, so there is no recent information available.

Amanza Smith

As for Amanza Smith, Knutson’s findings align with the show’s storyline. “That’s aligned with what I’m seeing now and have always seen when I’ve checked this. She’s not DRE registered. She’s not an active real estate agent in the state of California from what I can tell,” says Knutson.

The Oppenheim Group’s website lists Smith as a “Real Estate Associate/Interior Design Specialist.”

Chelsea Lazkani

Moving on to Chelsea Lazkani, Knutson discovered that she sold one house within the past year. The listing, located in Manhattan Beach, can also be found on Zillow, with the property selling for $3.9 million.

Bre Tiesi

As for new cast member Bre Tiesi, who happens to be one of Nick Cannon’s children’s mothers, Knutson couldn’t find any residential inventory for her in the California MLS.

It remains unclear if Tiesi’s real estate background comes from a different state or if she is currently inactive in the real estate market.

Shedding Light on Their Actual Careers

While ‘Selling Sunset’ continues to entertain audiences with its luxurious properties and dramatic narratives, Michelle Knutson’s investigation sheds some light on the legitimacy of the cast members’ real estate careers.

Others Raise Questions About Their Role in the Industry

While some, like Mary Bonnet and Chrishell Stause, have a proven track record of successful sales, others raise questions about their level of involvement in the industry.

TV Doesn’t Align With the Real World

As viewers enjoy the show’s captivating storylines, it’s essential to remember that the reality TV world may not always align with the real-world dynamics of the real estate profession.
