Just the Two of Them
OP is a 32-year-old single mother with a 14-year-old daughter. OP’s husband died when the daughter was very young.
They’re Super Close
Because OP and her daughter have been alone together for so long, they’re very close. The girl confides in her mother about everything.
It Was a New Adventure
Recently, OP’s daughter asked her to take her out to the movies with a boy from her class. OP knew the boy from school events and was excited to accompany her daughter on her first date.
They Had a Great Time
As OP had expected, the young man was polite and respectful. They all had a fun time, and OP’s daughter was grateful for her mom’s help.
They Were Going to Catch Up
Not long after the daughter’s movie date, OP visited her sister’s house for coffee and to catch up.
She Had a Tough
The sister had gone through a messy divorce 3 years earlier, and her two teenagers live mostly with their father.
She Was Very Strict
OP knew that a big reason for the divorce was her sister’s parenting style. She believed that children should have no privacy and was always rifling through her kids’ stuff and taking away the doors to their rooms.
She’s No Fun at All
OP’s sister even searches through her kids’ phones every night, and she won’t even let them hang out with friends. Her house is a complete no fun zone.
She Caused All the Problems
OP’s former brother-in-law did not agree with that approach, and it led to many fierce arguments and, ultimately, the divorce. Her sister’s strict parenting was also the reason her kids wanted to live with their father.

OP loves her sister, but they both grew up under very strict rules, so OP understands why her sister’s kids don’t want to live with her. She doesn’t quite get why her sister wants to be like their own intolerant parents were, though.

Not surprisingly, all the kids came up in conversation while the sisters enjoyed their coffee. OP told her sis about the date she had taken her daughter on with the young man from her class.
She Called Out Her Parenting Skills
OP’s sister laughed at first, but when she realized OP was serious, she got angry. She said that 14-year-olds aren’t capable of going on dates by themselves and that OP was a bad mother for putting her daughter in a compromising situation.
She Thought She Was Better
The sister ended her rant by telling OP that she would never let her own children date at such an early age.
