High school can be a tricky time for everyone, especially when it comes to friendships. In a recent Reddit post, a high school student asked whether she was wrong for making a joke which got her friendship in trouble.
Best Friends
The Original Poster (OP) and her friend are both 18 years old. They’ve been friends since the second grade. Despite the ups and downs that any friendship has, they were pretty close.
They Were Always There for Each Other
The best friend was the only one in OP’s friend group that remained when she had to break up with them in February due to pointless drama.
They Liked to Make Fun of One Person
OP said that there’s one person they both like to make fun of: the friend’s cousin.
The Cousin Is the Target
He’s a typical high school guy, a bit cringe and always trying to act like a gangster despite living in the suburbs.
OP and her friend have made jokes about him in the past, always adding to each other’s quips. It’s just something they do, and it’s always been harmless fun.
Things Changed
But now OP believes that their friendship may be coming to an end. Things took a turn for the worse when the friend posted a picture of the cousin on her Instagram story, throwing up gang signs.
OP replied with a simple “ewww”, which is something they always say about him when they’re joking around.
The Friend Didn’t Like the Comment
However, her friend didn’t take kindly to the comment, telling her to stop being a hater and that she was annoying.
She Was Confused
OP was confused and tried to explain that she was just joking around, but her friend didn’t want to hear it.
OP replied that she is literally just saying the stuff they both used to joke about and that her friend should know she was literally joking.
She Was Just Joking
OP went on to say that she has never said the cousin is a bad person and she is just joking around about the stuff.
She Asked Her to Stop
As a response, her friend has said to stop being a hater as it gets annoying and if OP doesn’t like hanging out with her cousin then stop being friends with her and him.
Things Get Sour
She went on to say that she had previously ordered OP to stop because it had gotten to her, but OP said that is untrue because she always laughs when they are having fun.
And OP says that if she had told her, she would have stopped it without a doubt if it had offended her.
She Never Offends Him
OP said that when they are making jokes about the cousin, she never speaks poorly of him and instead she always just laughs and concurs with her.
The End of Their Friendship?
Standing up for family is something OP can understand, but if they are really close best friends, then she shouldn’t be taking this literally.
OP says that her friend’s statement of “just stop being friends with me” indicates that she is actually ready to easily break up with OP.
She Asked Reddit for Help
OP took to Reddit to ask their opinion and whether she was wrong for making a joke.
Most Redditors didn’t support OP and said that she was wrong for making fun of people and not understanding their feelings.
One comment read, “It’s bad enough you constantly belittle this kid in private even if he seems a bit cringe to you. Was your comment on her story something that only she could see?”
“In any event, you typed that if she had told you earlier to stop you would have. Well, she’s definitely telling you to stop now, so what’s the problem? Apologize and move on.”
So what do you think? Is OP wrong for what she did?
