They Wanted Him to Go to His Twin’s Surprise Birthday Party…as a Guest!

A young man recently hit up Reddit for opinions on whether he should attend a surprise birthday party for his twin brother, but only as a guest.

Here is his full story.

They Shared a Group of Friends

OP is a 24-year-old man who will turn 25 in just a few days.

He has a twin brother, and they’ve both been friends with the same group of girls for several years.

OP admits that the brother is probably closer to those girls now, but not by all that much.

A Shocking Surprise Party

It was a pretty big shock to OP when one of the girls recently added him to a group chat to plan a surprise dinner for his brother’s birthday.

But OP was only being invited as a guest, even though it’s his birthday, too.

He Would Be a Third Wheel on His Birthday

One of the other people in the group chat mentioned that it would be nice to see OP as well, which just made him feel like even more of a third wheel.

OP thought maybe the girls just wanted a private get-together with his brother, but then noticed something else.

Not only was the core group of girls involved, but all of the twins’ shared guy friends were invited, and so was the OP’s own girlfriend.

So he really was just going to be a guest at his twin’s birthday party, just like all the rest of them.

It Could Have Been Different

OP felt blindsided and disrespected. He wondered why the girls didn’t reach out to his girlfriend so that he could be included in the surprise.

Or just involve both brothers from the beginning so they could both celebrate their birthdays.

Even His Girlfriend Couldn’t Believe It

OP’s girlfriend told him she thought the party plans were disrespectful to him, too.

They were both left wondering how the girls could possibly expect OP to show up as a guest at his twin’s party.

They Always Celebrate Together

The organizers even went so far as to tell OP to arrive with everyone else at a certain time, and that his twin would show up 20 minutes later for the surprise.

It’s all very strange to the OP, because the friends are well aware the two men are twins and that they always celebrate their birthdays together.

A Tough Decision to Make

So now the OP has to decide whether he’s going to show up at all. It feels weird to him to celebrate only his twin’s birthday when it’s also his own birthday.

But the thought of not being there for his brother makes him feel guilty.

To make matters worse, as OP was trying to figure out what to do, the organizer posted more information about the dinner party.

She booked the dinner for 10 people, with a set menu and budget. There were already 11 people who said they were going, excluding the OP and his girlfriend.

He’ll Have to Beg

If he wants to go to the party now, he’s going to have to ask the organizers to change the dinner plans.

He might even have to beg a little, since it’s going to cost them more and since the party is coming up fast.

Can the Relationship Survive?

OP says he’ll feel like he’s missing out if he doesn’t go, but he’s going to feel left out even if he does go. The organizers have set him up to be an outsider on his own birthday.

He wonders whether he can take a stand by not showing up and yet still keep a good relationship with his brother.

Reddit Responds

Reddit commenters are mostly telling the OP that it’s OK if he doesn’t go to the party.

Some are outright telling him not to go. Several even recommend that he confront the organizers and tell them what a crappy thing they’re doing to him.

Some go a bit further and tell him to expose the whole surprise to his brother and then ditch the whole party together.

What do you think about this story? Is OP right for feeling slighted by his group of friends? Or should he just suck it up and go celebrate his twin’s birthday?

Is there still some chance that the friends are planning to surprise the OP, too, and he’ll miss out if he doesn’t show up?
