On Monday, October 9th, former President Donald Trump told a New Hampshire audience that he thinks former President Barack Obama is secretly acting president.
The Quote
“It’s never been worse than it is now under crooked Joe Biden and, frankly, his boss, Barack Hussein Obama,” Trump told a crowd of hundreds.
Weeks in the Making
Trump had been suggesting for weeks that Obama was still secretly President, but Monday night was the first night Trump said so explicitly and directly.
An Old Conspiracy Theory
It’s an old internet conspiracy theory that dates back to 2020 when Obama was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. A clip of the appearance re-circulated this fall in right-wing circles on the internet.
Obama Jokes With Colbert
“Did you ever look at something going on in the news and say, ‘You know what this situation needs? A little Barack Obama.’” Colbert asked. “If I could make an arrangement where I had a stand-in,” Obama answered jokingly.
Obama Relationship With Biden No “Bromance”
There has never been any evidence to suggest that Obama is secretly acting President.
Reportedly, Obama and Biden have a cooler, more complicated relationship than their friendship during the Obama Administration. Although, Obama does still occasionally meet with Biden.
Roots in Conservative Media
In June, Daily Wire Co-Founder Ben Shapiro shared an image from the Colbert interview on Instagram with the caption “LOL”.
Trump Is a Repeat Offender
Soon afterward, several conservative publications used the interview as a jumping-off point to question Biden’s age and abilities.
Trump is known to repeat things that he hears in conservative media circles.
Not a First
It was not Trump’s first time sharing conspiracy theories in public. Trump continues to claim that he won the 2020 election despite no evidence of widespread fraud.
In fact, Trump’s speech that evening contained many more falsehoods.
Bacon Costs 500% More
For example, Trump claimed that the price of Bacon had gone up five times in the past year and a half.
The fact-checking website Politifact rated Trump’s claim as false. In Trump’s description of events, the price of bacon would be 500% greater than it currently is.
Militants in the South
Trump also claimed, without evidence, that Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist organization, was sending militants to illegally enter the US through the American southern border.
Brief Mention of Hamas
Hamas, which launched a surprise attack against Israel over the weekend, was briefly discussed by Trump in the 90-minute speech.
What a Difference a President Makes
“Less than four years ago, we had peace in the Middle East,” Trump said. “Today we have an all-out war in Israel and it’s gonna spread quickly. What a difference a president makes. Isn’t it amazing?”
No Solutions for Israel
Trump claimed that his presence alone in the White House would have been enough to prevent the war in Israel.
Bring Back the Muslim Ban
Trump didn’t offer any deterrence plans beyond reinstating his “Muslim Ban”, a series of Trump-era executive actions that largely banned travel to the U.S. by people from majority-Muslim countries.
Trump Leads in New Hampshire
Trump currently leads the GOP field in New Hampshire by 30 points. Trump previously won the 2016 New Hampshire Republican primary with 35.2%.
